ANIMALS THAT WORK

Have someone hide an aromatic substance, such as an open perfume bottle, in the classroom. Use your sense of smell to track it down.

Next, pretend you are a bloodhound. Cut some blotter paper into one-inch squares, and soak them in clove oil (purchase it at a drug store or herb shop). Ask your teacher to drop a trail of them across a field. Take turns trying to follow the trail on your hands and knees while you are blindfolded.

The teacher can vary this activity by letting the trail circle across itself or by crossing it with a different scent.

Compare this experience with the tracking done by working animals such as bloodhounds.

What other kind of animal has the job of tracking a scent?
