The most important parts of sound are called pitch, intensity, and rhythm.
Pitch means the place of the sound; for example, if it is high (like a little bird's tweet), or low (like a big duck's quack).
Intensity means how strongly the sound enters your hearing-- not the same as loudness.
Rhythm means the "beat," or how many times in a given period of time that you hear the sound, and whether the sounds come at even intervals or unevenly.
Listen carefully when your teacher plays a single note on a musical instrument. Try to sing that same note. When your teacher plays several different notes, try to sing the first note he or she played.
When your teacher plays those several notes again, try to sing them all. Decide which notes are higher than the others, and which notes are lower than the others.
The same notes can be played by another musical instrument, so you can hear differences in intensity.
We can do rhythm in the same way. Your teacher can tap on the desk with a pencil, using a simple rhythmic pattern. Listen carefully, then try to tap the same rhythmic pattern.
Ask your teacher to play a series of notes in a plain rhythmic pattern; then ask him or her to play the same notes in a different rhythmic pattern. Hear the difference?
A song we all know can sound like a different song if it is played in a different rhythmic pattern. Try it!
Listen carefully again, while your teacher plays a series of seven notes on a musical instrument. Two of the notes will be the same. Try to choose the two that sound alike.
Sometimes objects make sounds that can be expected of those objects. As we know, there are sounds that are not musical. We learn, over time, what sounds many things make, and just by hearing the sound, we know what it is. We all know the sound of a car starting. We know the sounds of water running, in several different ways; from the faucet into a glass, from the faucet into the bathtub, and we know the sounds of rain.
We have a tape recording of different sounds. We will listen to all the sounds, and write a list of what we think the sounds are. Let's see who gets them all correct!
